Why We Invested In Anytype
Thomas Rush
There are very few teams building foundational technologies that have the potential to reshape how people communicate. Founders Anton Pronkin and Zhanna Sharipova however are developing a first-of-its-kind post-cloud communication network. Anytype is a decentralized, local-first platform that combines the best of offline software, messaging, cloud services, and blockchain infrastructure.
What Stood Out
Organic Growth at Scale
Anytype already attracts 30,000 – 50,000 new users each month through 100% organic growth / zero advertising. Their community is made up largely of non-crypto users — proof that they are using Anytype for the value they get from the product. There’s no token yet, no incentives, no headlines about decentralization.
Product Architecture Built for the Long Term
Anytype’s core protocol, any-sync, is local-first. Data lives on users’ devices and syncs peer-to-peer, not through centralized servers. This makes the product:
Extremely fast
Private: end-to-end encrypted with all data being user-owned
Durable: The product is free and usable even if the company disappears, and users can always export their data and leave Anytype behind if they want
Beautiful design:

The Right Use Cases
Individuals, banks, biotech labs, quantum computing companies, and others all use Anytype because it offers true autonomy: no lock-in, a user’s data is available offline, privately, and with a much faster UX.
Why Local-First Matters
The last decade of software innovation has been dominated by cloud platforms. But the trade-off has been clear: convenience in exchange for privacy, autonomy, and long-term durability. Anytype flips this model:
You get convenience (a fast product available offline) while owning your data.
You choose how and where it syncs.
You can collaborate privately without intermediaries.
This approach creates a foundation for an entirely new category of software: applications that are social, decentralized, and extensible—without the risks of centralized platforms extracting most of the value while exploiting its users.
The Big Vision
If Anytype becomes wildly successful, it will become a decentralized operating system:
A private, programmable, AI-native coordination layer for people and machines.
An ecosystem where developers build applications across a shared ecosystem of data and user contributions.
A network where creators and communities capture value directly through tokenized channels, subscriptions, and marketplaces.
Think of this future as a social graph with applications custom-built for your needs, but without the cloud, without intermediaries, and with full user ownership.
Why We’re Excited
Exceptional Team: The Anytype team has consistently delivered product and growth without hype-driven marketing. They are focused on the long-term.
Unique Positioning: They sit at the intersection of cryptography, local AI, social graphs, and privacy-first communication—an unusual and powerful mix.
Strong Moat: Their local-first, cryptographically verifiable architecture is a huge technical moat that required years of development.
Massive Upside: If it all works, Anytype doesn’t just compete with other apps—it eats into the entire software stack of databases, social networks, and payment networks.
Risks
The team chose a simple notes app / wiki (like Notion) as their beachhead for adopting users. It’s a phenomenal choice but comes with the obvious risk that it’s a crowded market with well-capitalized players that are continuing to reinforce their network effects. However the founders have taste and deep technical expertise which is a rare and incredibly valuable combination.
The Outlier Potential
On our scale of “outlier potential”—the ability to create something entirely new, reshape an ecosystem, or disrupt an industry—Anytype scores high. If they execute on their roadmap, they can build a decentralized OS for billions of people, and it’s why we invested.
